Thinking of getting serious about towing and want to check if your F150 comes with a max tow package? The quickest way to go about that is to check your Window Sticker.

If you checked yours and still aren’t sure, check out my guide to learn more details and other methods to check for the Max Towing Package.

How To Know If Your F150 Has Max Trailer Tow Package?

There are 8 ways you can check if your F150 is equipped with a max trailer tow package. Let’s go through them one by one:

1. Window Sticker Inspection

The window sticker or Monroney label can let you know whether you have the Tow Package or not. Here’s how:

  • Find the window sticker for your F-150.
  • Navigate to the “optional equipment/other” section.
  • Confirm the inclusion of the Max Trailer Tow Package.

2. Use VIN Number

If you don’t have the sticker, you can use the VIN to get it and then see the package details:

That should tell you whether you have it or not. Keep in mind that the data might be inaccurate.

Unfortunately, you won’t always get a fully detailed breakdown like the Ford Etis provided, which is no longer in commission.

If you’re uncertain, you can combine what you find with the other methods I’ll go through.

3. Examine Safety Chain Loops of Trailer Hitch Receiver

If the loops are angled, your truck likely has the upgraded rear bumper associated with the Max Tow Package.

Standard options have more basic loops.

4. Look At The Trailer Receiver Hitch Rating

Look at the rating label on your trailer hitch receiver to find out your towing capacity.

With the MTTP in your truck, it goes beyond 14,000 pounds.

Keep in mind that this number is influenced by your payload, so consider factors like a 4×2 configuration, a regular cab, and an 8′ box.

5. See If You Have HDPP

When you have a Heavy-Duty Payload Package (HDPP) on your 3.5-liter Ford F-150, it’s a strong hint that your truck is rocking the Max Tow Package.

It’s a must to have that Payload Package equipped on a 3.5L.

6. Check Axle Ratio

If your F150 has the Max Trailer Tow Package, it will come equipped with a 3.55 (L9) rear axle ratio featuring an electronic-locking differential.

If you have the Heavy-Duty Payload Package in combination with the Max Trailer Tow Package, the gear ratio will be 3.73 (L6).

  • Find the axle code on the door label.
  • Identify the axle ratio code and check the Ford website.
  • Check the build sheet, if available, for complete information.
  • Determine differential type by bolt count and axle teeth.

7. Look At Leaf Springs

Inspect the leaf springs of your F-150’s rear suspension. If it has three leaf springs, it likely has the Max Tow Package. Standard setups usually only have one leaf spring and a helper.

8. Check Fuel Capacity

The max tow package boasts a roomy 36-gallon tank, a noticeable step up from the base models offering 26 or 23 gallons.

If your tank showcases this larger capacity, it’s a reliable clue that your truck is equipped with the max trailer tow package.

However, keep in mind that the 36-gallon tank isn’t exclusive to just the max trailer tow package; you might come across it in other trailer packages too.

This also doesn’t work with the 3.5L PowerBoost Full Hybrid V6 engine, as Ford doesn’t include the 36-gallon tank, even with the Max Trailer Tow package.

Just remember, your actual towing capacity depends on what you’re hauling, how you set up your truck, the extras you add, and how many passengers you’ve got.
